DevOps Engineer (PHP)

Vanilla is looking for a DevOps Engineer (PHP) who will be responsible for installation, configuration and maintenance of our SaaS cloud systems. He or she will also support daily operations and help develop strategies to improve availability and utilization of Vanilla’s supporting applications, along with monitoring and alerting. In addition, this candidate will design, implement, and scale our infrastructure technologies and platform to support our development process. The most qualified candidates will have prior experience with the most up to date software development, automation, and deployment practices.

Heads up! This is a fairly development / code-heavy role. We manage several complex APIs which require maintenance and care, and we build tools that are used by the entire company and our end users. Pure sysadmin / ops skills are an asset, but there is plenty of code to write as well.

Excellent communication skills are critical whether you’re talking to a developer or anyone else in the company. This is a great opportunity for an experienced Developer to break into DevOps, or for a DevOps Engineer to make an impact in an environment that encourages people to take initiative.

This position is located in Montreal, Quebec and reports to the Chief Operating Officer. Remote workers will not be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Develop a highly scalable API-driven hosting infrastructure.
  • Interact with Vanilla’s managed Openstack environment.
  • Deploy other management platforms supporting our SaaS product (support, billing, etc).
  • Maintain Linux/Unix environment including account creation, application deployments, script creation, and backups.
  • Enhance and improve Vanilla’s autoscaling systems.
  • Maintain the network and security across multiple products.
  • Monitor and improve application performance monitoring systems.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve hardware and software issues when necessary.
  • Proactively monitor servers, storage, security, applications and services.
  • Deploy hardware, patches/updates utilizing best practices.
  • Work closely with developers to support the packaging, deployment, monitoring, and system reliability scripting that turns software into a complete deployed product.
  • Work with DevOps counterparts to bring all systems into a unified platform and process.
  • Provide technical support for system users.
  • Duties will vary based on experience. (i.e. previous work as a DBA, Network Engineer, Information Security, etc.).
  • Minimal travel required
  • Be available for on-call and after hours support including weekends and holidays.

Experience / Skills

  • Highly proficient in PHP (particularly PHP7).
  • 2+ years of experience in Cloud technologies and architecture of Cloud solutions.
  • 2+ years in system administration/technician role.
  • 2+ years working with Linux operating systems.
  • Extensive experience with MySQL and database architecture.
  • Effective writing skills for policies, procedures, external and internal communications.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with numerous departments, employees and external users.
  • Familiar with, and proponent of, modern source control (we use Git).

Bonus skills / what you might learn here

  • Working with network components and configurations including Firewall, Wi-Fi, TCP/IP, and VPN systems.
  • Continuous software deployment/integration (CI/CD)

Education

  • High school diploma required.
  • Associates or bachelor degree in IT, Computer Science, or related/applicable field preferred.

Graphic and UI Designer

Vanilla is searching for a talented Graphic and UI Designer who wants to join a profitable and rapidly growing SaaS startup. As the sole full time designer at Vanilla, you would wear more than one hat and be part of both the product and marketing teams.

Ideally, you have solid experience wireframing and mocking up user interfaces, as well as the capacity to product logos, graphics and other graphical assets for both product and marketing initiatives. You should be comfortable taking ownership of the visual brand as well as its aesthetics, and should be ready to enforce brand conformity throughout our messaging.

Migration Developer (PHP, MySQL)

We are looking for a Migration Developer to join our Services team to help us bring existing communities running on other platforms over to Vanilla’s Hosted Cloud.

As a Migration Developer, your primary responsibility is to process data exports from other platforms and convert them into a usable format for our import tools. You will work with several teams to deliver data migration services to our customers. You’ll be responsible for estimating on new migration tasks, and building custom import packages when we encounter new platforms.
