Split and Merge

Hello, Team Vanilla:

With the split and merge tool, is it possible to move new posts to existing discussions? If so, how? I looked for a tutorial and couldn't find one.

Thanks!

  • Howdy,

When you're within a discussion, you can check individual comments (checkbox is in the top right corner of each comment). Then you should see a notification in the lower left corner with a "Split" option. This is how you make comments into a separate discussion.

When you're viewing a list of discussions, there are checkboxes toward the right side of the list. When checking those, you should get a notification in the lower left corner with a "Merge" option that will combine those discussions.

I think the "Merge" option is what you're looking for, but let me know if that doesn't cover it.
  • Hi, Lincoln:

Thanks. Unfortunately, it looks like this feature isn't as useful as it could be. Here is the situation:

We have a new game with a lot of users who do not know how to use forums. No amount of the mods stepping in seems to help. Player 1 will start a discussion about the game not loading, and ten more players will jump in with ten unrelated issues. Also, players are starting many independent discussions about the same issues without looking for existing discussions.

These discussions (especially the seriously disorganized ones) are getting very, very long. As a result, it's tough to help our players. The players are encountering legitimate issues, and it would be helpful to, for example, check boxes for problem A and be able to merge them to an existing discussion.

In short, a moderation tool to merge individual posts from one discussion and merge them into an existing discussion would be great and incredibly useful, rather than just splitting them.
  • You could do this as a 2-step process: First, split into their own discussion. Second, merge that new discussion into an existing one.

I agree this isn't an ideal scenario when your goal is to simply move a comment from one discussion to another, but it's the best way currently available. If you're like us to prioritize making a plugin that does what you need more efficiently, I can have our project manager contact you to put together a quote.
  • I'm not seeing the options for splitting and merging. Is this a feature I need to turn on some how in the dashboard?

    Thanks,

    Bryan
  • Hi @brydeemer, Split/Merge is a plugin currently available on the Small Business plan level and above.
  • Seriously? That's basic functionality. $50 a month is a hell of a lot of money just to host forums. I certainly would have expected it to come with the basics.
  • @brydeemer I was actually just emailing you; I didn't expect you to be quite so fast. If that's the only higher-plan plugin you need, I don't have an issue enabling it. Sorry for not simply stating so here.
